In addition to debates, lectures, roundtables and conferences, the UIA2021RIO also brings a series of cultural activities.

One of them will be the launch of the documentary A Cidade de Portas, based on the thinking of Portuguese architect Nuno Portas, professor emeritus at the University of Porto.

The documentary will be released exclusively to UIA2021RIO congressmen, at the Mundo dos Filmes session, on July 19, from 8 pm. The film is directed by Humberto Kzure, Brazilian architect and urban planner, and Teresa Prata, Portuguese filmmaker.

About the movie:

A Cidade de Portas”is a documentary about the city as the frontier of thought by Nuno Portas, visionary architect, urban planner and professor emeritus at the University of Porto – Portugal. His reflections, his architectural and urban projects, as well as the urban plans he coordinated and the books he wrote, raise a deep debate about the city as a cultural object, full of multiple ambiences and spatial contradictions, which reflect and define everyday experience of “being urban”.

The universe of Nuno Portas, born in Vila Viçosa in 1934, began at the Atelier at Rua da Alegria in Lisbon, where he worked with the notable architect Nuno Teotónio Pereira. Portas’ pioneering, blunt and daring ideas materialized as valuable contributions in cities such as Lisbon, Porto, Guimarães, Aveiro, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. In the Portuguese-Brazilian context, the film portrays, through different voices, the multifaceted path of Portas, whose legacy contributes to the enhancement and dissemination of knowledge in Architecture and Urbanism for future generations.

Declaration of directors

Given the importance of Nuno Portas’ contributions to thinking and designing the contemporary city in a sociocultural dimension, the film “A Cidade de Portas” was made with the purpose of documenting and making public, for future generations, the cosmopolitan look of this architect and urban planner Portuguese, whose reflections and works carried out allow for an in-depth analysis of urban space in the global sphere.
