The present proposal analyzes the urban complexity of Maré and the site chosen for the intervention as an intermediary between the city and the neighborhood. A possibility of transition from Maré to a space of urban protagonism is presented, with the search for sustainable images, identities and new latent possibilities.

Undestanding the geographical protagonism of Maré, it its proposed a new metro line that can pass through the neighborhood as an intermediary station. For the intervention, we will divide the project in two main actions: the first one, at the intervention- neighborhood interface, is proposed a large infrastructure and all the necessary support for its operation: The Linear Park; the second one, in the intervention-city interface, it is proposed a new way of appropriate the existing territory and transforming the urban typology, through Urban Densifiers and propositional actions.

Its proposed here 4 actions to operate on the Linear Park, looking forward to a renewal of the public space: to rescue memories, to provoke collectivity, to catalize spaces and to discover landscapes.

The project proposes to replant local tree species that are attractive to the carioca’s fauna, either with its fruits or with its flowers. With great biodiversity, throughout the Wetland, the species will meander the buildings shading their entire eastern façade.

For the urban rehabilitation, the Urban Densifiers will house different typologies that actively participate in the city reconstruction process. For its operations, it is proposed two actions in dialogue with the existing buildings: renew the buildings or construct a new one. Along Avenida Brasil it will be proposed a distance of 15 meters marginal from the avenue and four streets of vital importance to the site were chosen in order to their sidewalks be widened and the street-bicycle-sidewalk-elevated walkways interactions works.

Understanding the Complexo da Maré territory as the driving force for any action on the proposed site, we treated the chosen space as a terrain vague and used the solution proposed by Ignasi de Solà-Morales to act in this kind of territory “through attention to continuity: not the continuity of the planned, efficient, and legitimated city but of the flows, the energies, the rhythms established by the passing of time and the loss of limits.” More than just a concluded project with it defined intentions, the proposal seeks, as Paulo Mendes da Rocha says, to support the unpredictability of life present in it.

By providing the necessary conditions for a new urbanity on the intervention site, the attention of the Government and the society will be up to any change that may have a real effect. The Complexo da Maré efferves cultural, educational, indentity and productive actions, and the project is part of this continuous process in response to the inequalities that have been imposed on the community since its formation.
