Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the site is an industrial area bordering on the Complexo Maré. Due to the decline of industry and the influence of informal settlements, the region has been seriously stigmatized, and is facing serious social, economic and living problems. Informal housing is occupying the territory of the industrial zone. Residents build their own houses in those abandoned factories, which leads to the gradual decline of the area and the emergence of internal informal.

We made a multi-dimensional evaluation of the site status, and summarized it into the following three aspects:

1. Factory relocation, economic decline. The site industry is single, scattered, lack of contact and low degree of specialization.
2. Illegal occupation, disorderly growth. Housing occupied factories, lack of infrastructure, confusion of people and vehicles.
3. Social barriers, security threats. The education level of community residents is low and the stigma is serious.

Our vision for the future of the area is not a fixed paradigm, but a dynamic development model. We envisage the gradual growth and development process of the region in the next twenty years to show the strategy and planning intention for future construction and development, and put forward the overall design strategy of the site:

1. Acupuncture and moxibustion reform is a low-cost and high-efficiency intervention method.
2. From the bottom to the top, the residents' self construction is the main task, and the government intervention is the auxiliary to guide the groups to build, govern and share together.
3. Orderly growth, designed for the process rather than the result, uses different interventions at different stages of development.
4. Promote functional mix to improve community health and vitality.

Based on the overall design strategy, we put forward the concepts of community rebirth, economic revival and ecological refresh from three dimensions of housing, industry and environment. In terms of housing, we aim at housing renovation, improve the quality of existing informal housing in the site, and use the original factory structure to stack modular housing upward to move residents from informal housing. In terms of industry, we propose to establish the connection between family industry and industrial production, to implant cultural and creative industries with local cultural foundation, and to develop urban agriculture. In terms of ecology, we have created a continuous open space system and set up a set of ecological recovery mechanism to recycle garbage, sewage and rainwater, and suggest a series of preventions to keep the community safe and peaceful.

With these strategies, we hope to reshape the community vitality and make it a home for both physical and mental healthy development.
