In 2020, the Theory and Design: Verticality studio proposed a design exercise of a building with timber structure in São Paulo. The studio was developed under the guidance of a visiting professor, as part of the multidisciplinary team of this studio, for which the present design project was developed.

Aligned with the 27th World Congress of Architects’ thematic axis “changes and emergencies”, the In vitro building design, is a practical showcase of a building for the future, presenting innovative materials and an important discussion: the world crisis in the food production and the new ways of living proposed by the quarantine, through a mixed use program with a vertical farm.

Vertical buildings are difficult to construct and also difficult to collapse. Their designs must reflect the human issues of the future, such as sustainability, climate change and urban agriculture, due to the legacy they represent.
Currently, more than 80% of the planet’s arable land is already in use, therefore vertical farms prove to be an efficient alternative by producing 20 times more than traditional agriculture. The mixed-use program also features offices, apartments, coworking spaces, stores and restaurant.

The structure of the building is in Glulam, glued laminated timber. The purpose of adopting this sustainable material is to rationalize the construction and review the conceiving process of the design, based on its constructive methodology, encouraging its feasibility.
